These Paper People

I’ve never come across anyone
That cares about anything that matters

Not in this town, not in this city
Not in this fragile facility we call a living

Not in this state, not in this country
We’re all living and dying, without dreaming

We’re breathing and falling, loving and lying
We’re all singing and crying, without believing

These paper people, from these paper towns
They’re all watching and waiting

They’re all waiting and failing
To be anyone or anything worth anything

The soulless banality
The intoxicating concoction of mediocrity

My Margo is my blood flow
To let go and be more than what they say

What they see is none of me
What I see is none of me

The fireworks in my eyes is the dancing
Long into the night upon these pages

In these words are forged memories forever
Of reaching beyond our ages
